A Historical Journey through Pharmacology, Total Synthesis, and Evolution Towards Iboga Alkaloid Analogs

Abstract
Ibogaine, a powerful psychedelic, has been used throughout the world for much of human history. Its diverse usage has led to a unique outlook of the indole alkaloid as both an integral part of life and a concerning psychedelic. The pharmacologic community showed initial interest in utilizing ibogaine for the treatment of a number of substance use disorders; however, difficulty in synthesis has largely hindered therapeutic development. This work aims to examine the history of ibogaine, including its pharmacological properties and total syntheses, as well as potential applications of structurally similar chemicals.
